You are warmly invited to the Youth, Race and Social Media symposium, a one-day event at Goldsmiths, University of London.
The symposium brings together youth workers, educators, safeguarding leads, policy commissioners, community safety teams, students and researchers to reflect on the experiences of black and racially minoritised young people engaging with racial content on social media, and to consider together what accountability and digital empowerment look like in practice.

ABOUT THE SYMPOSIUM
This event will provide a collaborative and supportive space to engage with the findings from the Youth, Race and Social Media project and consider their implications for practice and policy. There will be responses and provocations from practitioners and policymakers and reflection on what accountability and digital empowerment mean for black and racially minoritised young people.
The research has clear implications for social media platforms and policy more broadly. A central recommendation for social media platforms is for them to find new ways to engage and communicate with young people about their experiences and how they might develop more effective responses. The main recommendation for policy more widely is for the UK Government's Online Safety Act 2025 to ensure that its implementation takes specific account of the experiences of young people from racialised backgrounds. We hope the symposium offers a generous space where ideas can be tested and new directions considered.
